I majored in Engineering Physics at Cornell, while doing experimental research on gravity. I was originally wait-listed, but I had been conversing with Allen Hatcher during my senior year of high school and his subsequent recommendation got Cornell to pull me in. I thank him greatly, and also Ken Brown -- he took me under his wing and provided weekly one-on-one meetings (focusing on group cohomology).
I am now enjoying myself as a 2nd-year student of Michael Hutchings. I quote him giving a math lecture:
"This is a one-line proof if you start sufficiently far on the left."
